Your Roof, Ventilation

An attic is usually the place families store boxes, holiday decorations and a variety of other “treasures” but did you ever stop to think that your attic helps with your home’s temperature and your roof’s lifespan?

Most experts agree that an attic that is well ventilated helps to keep the temperature of your home more comfortable in the summer and guards against moisture build up in the winter.  Using your dryer, taking hot showers and cooking can cause moist air to rise.  If that moisture stays in the air long enough it can make its way into the attic where it can leave droplets on wood and insulation.  This can eventually cause rot and mold which left unattended to can create a health hazard to your family and a costly fix.  In the winter ice dams on your roof begin to form when warm air that is in the attic begins to melt the snow on the roof.  This melting snow flows down, reaching the cold edge of the roof where it freezes.  This continual cycle leads to ice dams which can cause the water to back up under the shingles and right into your home.  Not only does this cause damage to the inside of your home, but it causes damage to your roofing shingles as well.  So having proper roof ventilation can save you from unnecessary problems and can save you money in the long run.

Another reason to have your attic properly ventilated is because of your asphalt shingle warranty.  You need to follow the manufacturer’s venting requirements to ensure compliance so, should you need to file a claim, you have the assurance that your warranty will cover your problem.

If you are noticing ice dams forming at your roof line in the winter or excess moisture in your attic or if you just don’t know if you have the proper ventilation, it is best to talk with a qualified roofing contractor.  At Ronningen Roofing we have a knowledgeable team who can not only do the inspections but also, should the situation warrant it, discuss with you any ventilation problems your home may be having.  We have been servicing areas such as Stewartville, Minnesota for over 16 years.  We will take care of your home as if it were our own.
